What to Expect From Your First Personal Training Session

Almost every new client tells me the same thing: the hardest part wasn't the workout, it was picking up the phone. If you've never done one-to-one training before, not knowing what to expect can be enough to put the whole thing off for years. So here's exactly what happens, step by step.

Step 1 — The consultation

This is a relaxed, no-commitment conversation, usually 45–60 minutes, held in the studio. We'll talk through your goals, your health and injury history, and I'll take a few baseline measurements. There's no workout in this session — it's as much a chance for you to check the fit as it is for me to understand what you need. Come as you are; there's no need to arrive "gym ready."

Step 2 — Your first block

Once you're booked in, you'll start a block of six one-hour sessions. Your first couple of sessions focus on technique — learning to move well before we add any real load. From there, we build gradually toward proper strength work, always at a pace that matches where you're starting from.

What a typical session looks like

  • A short warm-up and check-in — how you're feeling, sleeping, any niggles.
  • The main session, built around the big movement patterns and your specific goals.
  • Core work, built into every single session.
  • A full stretch and cool-down to finish.

Common first-session worries

"I'm not fit enough yet" is the one I hear most — and it's exactly backwards. You don't need to get fit before you start; that's what the sessions are for. Everything is adapted to you, whether that means using lighter weights, modifying an exercise around an old injury, or simply taking things slower than you expected.

If any of this still feels daunting, that's completely normal — and it's exactly why the consultation exists. No pressure, no judgement, just a conversation to see if we're a good fit.
